The rules of reality can be broken and bent to any extent within animation. But just like any art form, where the line should be drawn (and hence the value of the art) is completely subjective. Richard Weihe, a contributing author to ‘Animated Worlds’, states that â€Å"The animation film is not an ‘interpretation of dreams’ from the perspective of Freudian reality, but rather an interpretation of reality from the perspective of the dream†. 1 This encompasses the essence of animation it is created by viewing reality through a distorted lens, the ‘dream’, so to speak. Like dreams, it is the element of reality that grounds animation, but dreams are different for everyone. The level of reality is contingent to the height of imagination the animator wishes to employ. In Windsor McCay’s 1914 animated film, ‘Gertie the Dinosaur’2 the eponymous dinosaur lumbered towards the audience from a distance, performing actions that McCay appeared to instigate in real time. The sense of perspective, weight and apparent intelligence of Gertie is what imbues reality in the animation. The novelty of Gertie’s movements and the simplicity of McCay’s drawing style deviate it from reality. McCay’s utilization of his metafictional techniques were an integral part of his animations that blurred lines between reality and escapism. Nevertheless it instilled intrigue and wonder in an audience, having a key role in establishing McCay as a father of ‘true’ animation. 3 Compare this to the many animated films made by Walt Disney Company. This is the chimeric, phantasmagorial realm of the magical realist genre of literature. Magical realism, as seen in the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, is a reflection of the Latin American postcolonial culture and has greatly influenced world literature for the last century, despite a complicated history and chronic nominal confusion. The history of magical realism is complex and multinational. To understand it, one must understand the history of the term itself. The phrase magic realism was coined by Franz Roh, a German art critic, in his 1925 book Post-Expressionism, Magic Realism: Problems of the Most Recent European Painting (Bowers 9) to describe the post-expressionist art of certain contemporary German painters (Bowers 9-10). Neither magical realisms authors nor its origins are confined to Latin America, however. It was largely influenced by the Romantic and Surrealist movements in Europe, and important precursors include quasi-surrealist German writer Franz Kafka, sixteenth-century Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes, and Italian surrealist painter Giorgio de Chirico (Bowers 18). Among the first genuine magical realists was German author G ¨unter Grass, author of The Tin Drum (Bowers 19). Modern magical realists hail from such nations as the United States, India, Japan, Canada, Nigeria, and Italy, including noted authors Toni Morrison and Salman Rushdie (Bowers 18; Cowan 4). But all subsequent examples will be taken from what is arguably his most famous work, One Hundred Years of Solitude, the story of the Buendia family. Although this may sound like a typical scene from the local amusement park, it's actually the city zoo. All that forgotten was walking from cage to cage watching the anxious animals pace back and forth in their closed-in prisons (Hope, 1994). Their cages feel cold and desolate. The concrete floor provides no warmth and the atmosphere is sterile. The animals do not appear very happy in this closed-in environment. Just who are these anxious animals? They are the common everyday animals any child could name: the bears, the tigers, the elephants and the monkeys. What about the rest of the world's unique creatures? Hundreds of species are endanger of becoming extinct, and conservation is in need. Extinction is a permanent issue. The treatment of all our animals and their rights is important as well. As concern for the world's animals becomes more prominent in the news, our zoos rise up to meet the challenge. Animal's rights and their treatment, regardless of species, have been brought to attention and positive movements made. While the number of endangered species grows, zoos attempt to do their part in conservation. Both in and out of the park, zoos and their scientist do their best to help these species. Well one day I went to school and got into a really bad fight and ended up in a juvenile facility over it. I was there for about a month went to court and the judge put me on probation for 3 years. Well I still thought I could do what I wanted to do. So I still kept doing the same behavior I was doing before then. Needless to say I ended up violating probation when I was 15 and they locked me up. I was in a juvenile facility for 3 months then went to court and they put me in a program for 1 year. Well when I got to the program I thought it was going to be easy. But I ended up finding it was actually very difficult. Well after I got out of my program I decided that was something I had never wanted to experience again. So still to this day, and am 21 now, I have not been back in jail or nothing. I have been abiding by the laws and actually I am doing really well for myself. Priestley is trying to make Mr Birling look stupid and wrong for making this speech and wants to prove that he is wrong. J.B Priestley believed a great deal in socialism and believed that many other people needed to be more caring about their community and the people in it. Priestley uses the character of the Inspector to convey his own thoughts, feelings and opinions concerning social issues. However, he also uses other characters particularly Mr Birling, to show the audience how cynical some people can be. Whilst the Inspector questions each family member the tension in the Birling house begins to increase greatly, the Inspector is pressuring the Birlings and Gerald to tell their story of how and when they met Eva Smith. At first they deny any knowledge of the girl, but as the play goes on the Inspector manages to show that they all helped to kill her, he did this by putting them on the spot, asking them questions that they could not answer and intimidating them. Mr Birling had her dismissed from his factory for demanding a small increase in wages; Sheila orders her to be dismissed from her job in a shop simply because of her pride; Gerald Croft keeps her as his mistress before leaving her suddenly; Eric also has an affair with the girl and steals money to keep her living; and Mrs Birling uses her influence at the Brumley Womens Charity Organisation to deny any help to Eva Smith when she needs it most, driving her to suicide. Therefore the presence of the Inspector causes an effect on the other characters, the way he speaks to them breaks the characters down and forces them to reveal the truth and be aware of their faults causing them to feel guilty and show the audience that the Inspector has more power over the Birlings at this point. The Inspector called himself Goole, which could be a pun on the word Ghoul which is often referred to as some kind of ghostly being. Towards the end of the play it becomes apparent to the audience that he isnt an actual Police Inspector. However, Priestley doesnt actually reveal who, or what the Inspector is, perhaps Priestleys aim was to leave this matter a complete mystery. This tactic could have been to ensure that his audience continue to think about the issues of socialism and this is something that he was desperate to have happen. The character of Eva Smith is a dramatic device in itself. Eva is different from everyone in this play. She shows the difference between the lower and upper classes. Her character attracts sympathy from the audience, each of the Birlings did something wrong to her to make the audience feel like this. Gerald and Eric just use her then never bother about her again. Mr Birling takes her job for granted and insisted she was to leave after asking for a well deserved pay rise. Mrs Birling doesnt care about her problems when she comes to talk to her about it, she refuses to help her. The character of Eva Smith shows that the lower class community were often better people that the higher class community. Priestley had made Eva Smith the complete opposite character to Mr Birling to clearly show whom is the better person. In conclusion I think that the whole family are to blame for the death of Eva Smith. They all had a hand in making Evas life a living hell. You could blame Gerald for breaking her heart or you could blame Mrs Birling for giving her the final push or you could even blame Eva herself for thinking there was no other alternatives. Priestley uses methods in this play that would leave his audience thinking for a long time after viewing the play. The way he used dramatic devices to convey his own message and opinions was an excellent way to get his audience thinking. He left open ends to whom the Inspector was, simply because he needed to get his message across and if he did this would leave then to think about the issues of socialism.

Learning from My Mentally Challenged Friend From the time I was two years old until I was about seven Steve had been my best friend. He and I went over to each other's houses all the time. At that age I was very friendly and loving to everyone but very over-active. I have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) so I was boisterous and restless. Everything was great until second grade when Steve's parents began to dislike my behavior because I was so "hyper." That's when they wouldn't let Steve be my friend anymore and eventually he was forced to cut off contact with me. This broke my heart and I would have been able to get over it without too many scars; if the rest of the kids had liked me. But they didn't. No one would play with me at recess and no one would ever come to my house. I began to get very depressed. My teachers were not aware of ADHD and were extremely critical of me and insensitive to my disability. It was then I was approached to help Freddie, who is mentally challenged, prepare for the upcoming "Challenger Little League." In the league disabled children play, and "normal" kids act as their "buddies" to help move the game along. Freddie's mom and mine thought it would be a good idea because I would be helping Freddie get ready for the league, and doing something for Freddie might make me feel better about myself. Since then we have been playing ball each fall and spring at his house once a week. In that time I have grown to know him as a person, his likes and dislikes. He has a strong personality that contradicts the image I had of kids with mental disabilities. I had imagined that they were essentially passive showing only faint recognition and response to anything happening in the world around them. And while this may be true for some severe disabilities, Freddie interacts with his environment just like I do. We just have different obstacles to face, different disabilities to overcome. Although in 1510, Trinidad was said to have peaceful Indians along the whole South America Coast, the demand for slaves to supply the pearl fisheries in nearby Isla Margarita led to them being declared â€Å"Caribs† (thus, fair game for slaves) in 1511. As a consequence, Trinidad became the focus of the Spanish slaving raids. Under a system employed by the Spanish Crown (Encomienda System), a person was granted a specific number of natives for whom they were to take responsibility. The receivers if this grant were to protect the natives from warring tribes and to instruct them in the Spanish language and in the Catholic faith. In return, they could extract tribute from the natives in the form of labour, gold, or other products. Failure to comply with this usually led to extreme punishment and death. The Amerindians were against this encomienda system which was basically a form of slavery and they were also against conversion to Christianity. Their way of life as they knew it was no longer, in that, they would now have to follow the Spanish culture, example, learn and speak the Spanish language, attires would be that of the Spanish influence, they now planted cocoa instead of cassava, and they would now have to follow Christian faith. Under this system many Amerindians were wiped out. Spanish missions were established as part of the Spanish colonization here as in its other New World conquest. In 1687 the Catalan Capuchin frairs were given the responsibility for the conversion of the indigenous population of Trinidad and Tobago and the Guianas. In 1713, the missions were handed over to the secular clergy. Due to shortage of missionaries, although missions were established they often went without Christian instructions for long periods of time. Between 1687 and 1700 several missions were founded in Trinidad but only four survived as Amerindian villages throughout the eighteenth century. 1. La Anuncita de Savana Grande (Princes Town) 2. Purisima Concepcion de Maria Santisima de Guayri (San Fernando) 3. Santa Ana de Savaneta (Savonetta) 4. Santa Rosa de Arima (Arima) The mission of Santa Rosa de Arima was established in 1789 when Amerindians from the former encomiendas of Tacarigua and Arauca(Arouca) were relocated further west. On December 1st 1699 the Arena Massacre (also known as the Arena Uprising) took place. This was as a result of the tension between priests and Amerindians. Amerindian in an attempt to regain their freedom murdered many priest. After being hunted by the Spanish, some of the survivors (Amerindians) were reported to have committed suicide by jumping off cliffs into the sea, however some were captured. Although the Spanish settlement began in the 16th century, the population in 1783 was less than three thousand, the Majority being Amerindians. In 1783 the proclamation of the Cedula of Population (a law passes by the Spanish Crown) granted 32 acres of land to each Roman Catholic who settled in Trinidad and half as much for each slave that they brought. Under this law, incentives such as free land, and exemption from paying most taxes, were granted. Because of the Hatian Revolution, many people from the French islands saw this as incentive and migrated to Trinidad along with their culture and slaves. The French at this time would have planted Sugar Cane for the purpose of Trade which would have in turn improved the economy of Trinidad. A census in 1777 showed 2763 people, by the time 1797 the population 17,643, by 1960 the population was 827,957, by this time the population contained no Amerindians.
